Uthina Amphitheater
Located in modern day Tunisia, this Roman colony sat along the main route to Carthage. The ancient city is still being excavated, and today we can see the stunning remains of the massive amphitheater. It was dug into the hillsides to provide seating for about 16,000 visitors at a time. Much of the amphitheater is in ruins today, however, and efforts are being made to reconstruct the seating.
Pozzuoli Amphitheater
This is one of the largest amphitheaters in Italy, boasting a capacity of over 20,000 spectators. The fascinating thing about this amphitheater is that much of the subterranean construction is very well preserved. We can still see the cages where animals were kept!
Pula Amphitheater
This is the sixth largest Roman arena that still exists today. It has been well-preserved and is a treasured monument in modern day Croatia. It could hold over 26,000 spectators at one time, and it is still used today to host cultural festivals and performances.
